Presenting Findings

Always try and present your findings in a way that readers and reviewers can easily assess the conclusions reached.

This applies to both direct and indirect costs and benefits.

In the future, the organization will need to review these strategies in the light of:

  • Actual maintenance costs
  • Revised indirect risk cost allowances
  • Actual failure histories
  • Actual condition decays
  • Better probabilities of failure
  • Changes in business objectives.

It is therefore important that we record our assumptions and derive our outputs in a way that these issues can be addressed in the future.

If we set up our ORDM analysis records in an appropriate way these items can be reviewed and updated very easily in the future as:

  • New information/data becomes available, or
  • The organization wishes to revise its objectives and put a greater weight on certain aspects of its activities, for example:
    • Environmental issues
    • Safety issues.

If we develop our processes and information systems to meet these future requirements considerable efficiencies will be derived when:

  • Completing detailed cost reduction opportunity analysis as part of a continuous improvement program
  • Completing future TAMP
  • Refining individual asset strategies
  • Altering future works programs to suit new business objectives or key issues.

The individual risk costs and therefore the potential cost reduction opportunities are shown for each of the individual assets, for example:

  • Cost of repair
  • Loss of production
  • Safety of staff
  • Environmental impact
  • Damage to other property
  • System disruption.

We need to think about the present and future business objectives for our organization, and structure our ORDM databases or spreadsheets to reflect these needs.

Information systems like ORDM are assets that should be maintained and enhanced like any other. If we think of a new cost or benefit that may be applicable, then we should ensure that the overall system is updated to allow it to grow with the sophistication of the organization.
