Level of Detail

There is a fine line between 'data' and 'information'.

An organization needs to actively plan its information requirements for demand analysis, and a well-managed IT system can greatly assist.

As an example of the level of detail required for demand analysis and planning, an asset manager would need to know:

  • What was the planned asset utilization versus actual utilization (the difference could be due to lack of demand or lack of availability)
  • Has the capacity of the asset diminished over time? Has the asset performed to its capacity?
  • Compare demand to capacity over time
  • How has planned and emergency maintenance affected the ability to supply? Were alternate sources of supply sought, and what were the costs?
  • What is the trend in peak loading?

Information that will enable cyclic trends to be established and analyzed includes:

  • Failure mode predictions
  • Maintenance trends and cost
  • The stage of the asset in its life.
