Resource Allocation

To allocate a resource to a project, there are a number of data requirements.

Firstly the resources for a given project need to be identified as one of:

  • Labor: What type of labor? What skill level is required to carry out the works? What amount of labor is required?
  • Material: What type and quantity of consumable material is required? What spare parts are required?
  • Plant and equipment: What equipment is required? What plant resources are required (either to carry out the works or to restrict access to)?
  • Contractors: What external contractors are required? What contractors are available to substitute either internal or external resources? For how long will the contractors be required?

Secondly, the project timings need to be determined in order to allocate the resources at the right time. Project/job data needed includes:

  • When does the project start?
  • Must the project start on this date? Is there any flexibility in the timeline? Does the project contain non-negotiable items in regard to timing?

In summary, to allocate a resource to a specific project, it is necessary to know:

  • What type of resource is required?
  • How much is required?
  • When it is required?
