Overview

Works resource management is allocating resources in an intelligent way, to achieve effective and efficient delivery of the projects or jobs. This includes:

  • Allocating labor resources according to project/job priorities
  • Managing the project/job through to completion
  • Storing and releasing the material resources according to project timings.

Managing works resources correctly means projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Planning activities and in particular predictive resource planning, are vital to intelligent works resource management.

The aims of works resource management are to:

  • Maximize the use of known resources
  • Minimize the cost of the asset management activities.

An organization may have a policy of contracting services, or specific skills for current demand needs. Good works resource management will factor in external contractors to execute part or whole projects.

The allocation of resources applies to recurrent (reactive and preventive) and capital expenditure projects.

Linkages to Asset Management Information Systems

The effectiveness with which we manage our job/resource allocation is critical to our ultimate efficiency. It is therefore important that we have an information system that supports these activities and allows us to monitor them.

Work and resource management systems are essential as the costs of labor, materials and plant are the costs of owning the asset. When depreciation allowances are added the "accrued" costs of the assets are known.

The linkages between work and resource management and the asset management information system are shown below:
