Questions to be asked about current asset utilization include:

  • How accurately can the organization assess the current capacity of their assets?
  • Do they have all the physical details necessary to calculate the current capacity?
  • Is this readily available on the asset database?
  • Is it capable of being downloaded to modelling systems or can it calculate capacity internally?
  • Does the organization have a system or method that allows them to determine the capacity of networked or aggregated assets? for example:
    • Single asset
    • Facility or group of assets
    • Region or supply district
    • System as a whole.
  • How accurately can the organization assess the current utilization or demand for these assets?
  • To what hierarchical level (asset categories) can the organization monitor the current use of the system?
    • Asset level
    • Facility level
    • Regional level
    • System level.
  • Is the monitoring real time (continuous)?
    • Peak only
    • Peak, minimum and average
    • Annual usage.
    • How good are the historical utilization records for these assets?
      • 2 years
      • 5 years
      • 10 years
      • 15 years and over.
  • Are the key drivers (causes) of these demands known for this historical period?
  • How does this level of utilization compare with other assets of similar categories in similar organizations using benchmarking?
