Effective Data Collection

In the implementation of total asset management plans, data capture may take up to 5 years, depending on:

• The level of details required
• The data already captured in the system
• The resources allocated in the program.

While data capture is required for condition assessment, risk management etc., it is not always possible to defer these other strategic activities until all data is collected.

The data capture should be implemented to the level of detail required to enable other processes to be carried out at the same time.

Because of the competing demand for resources in data collection, the data collection program needs to be prioritized according to the cost/benefits of collection.

Once this initial priority order is decided, the organization can then concentrate on the types of data and the level of details.
